About Reality Fitness
One woman's journey from 330 pounds to an active, faith-filled life in the mountains.
Carla's Story
My name is Carla Linder-Mayer, and over the past 14–15 years, I've lost over 165 pounds. It wasn't a quick fix or a dramatic transformation — it was a long, steady journey of small decisions, consistent effort, and learning to love the process of becoming healthier.
When I started, I weighed around 330 pounds. I was in my late 40s, and I knew something had to change — not for anyone else, but for me. I wanted to be able to live fully, to hike, to walk, to enjoy the incredible outdoors that surround us here in the Appalachian Southeast.
The Reality Fitness Philosophy
Reality Fitness was born from a simple belief: fitness should be real, accessible, and sustainable. No expensive gym memberships required. No extreme diets. No unrealistic expectations.
My approach is rooted in walking, hiking, stair climbing, and exploring the beautiful region we call home. Whether it's a morning walk with my husband Mark to get our coffee, a hike along the trails of the Great Smoky Mountains, or simply going up and down the stairs at home for one minute — every step counts.
Faith at the Foundation
My faith is at the center of everything I do. Every decision I make about my body — from daily walks to the decision to pursue reconstructive surgery after my weight loss — is filtered through the question: "Is this a godly decision?"
I don't believe fitness is about vanity. It's about stewardship — taking care of the body we've been given so we can live our best lives and serve others well. That's the heart of Reality Fitness.
Mark & Carla — Partners in Everything
None of this would be possible without my husband Mark. He's my walking partner, my biggest supporter, and my partner in every adventure. Whether we're doing our morning three-mile walk before sunrise or exploring a new trail in the Smokies, he's right there beside me.
Together, we live the active lifestyle we promote — right here in the Appalachian Southeast. From our home base in Chattanooga, we explore everything this beautiful region has to offer: the trails of the Great Smoky Mountains, the vibrant cities of Knoxville and Nashville, the charm of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, and all the hidden gems in between.
Fitness in Your 60s — Real, Not Perfect
I'm in my 60s, and I'm living proof that it's never too late to transform your life. I share my journey honestly — the victories, the struggles, and even the difficult decisions like pursuing reconstructive surgery. Because fitness at any age deserves real representation.
