Navigating Boundaries: Being a Supportive Grandparent

By Carla May 30, 2026

Becoming a grandparent is often described as one of life's greatest rewards—all the joy of loving a child with none of the sleepless nights. However, balancing the desire to be closely involved with respecting the parenting choices of your adult children can sometimes be a delicate dance.

The first step in creating a supportive role is open communication with the parents. Ask them directly how they would like you to be involved and what rules they have established for their household. Even if their methods differ wildly from how you raised them, showing respect for their authority builds immense trust.

When tensions do arise, approach the situation with grace rather than defensiveness. Focus on what you can provide: a legacy of unconditional love, a safe emotional harbor, and cherished memories.
